«Israel Fernández, el cantaor de Corral de Almaguer (Toledo) habla sobre el racismo que ha sufrido la comunidad gitana»

El cantaor Israel Fernández, de Corral de Almaguer (Toledo): "Nosotros los gitanos hemos sufrido mucho racismo"

Israel Fernandez, the flamenco artist from Corral de Almaguer, Toledo (1989), who will release his new album ‘Pura Sangre’ on Friday, May 26, has spoken out against racism in sports, stating that the Gypsy community has also experienced it first hand. Fernandez believes that the world should be firmly «against racism, to the death,» as he himself has experienced it. He adds that racism has always existed and can even be seen through the way people look at others. However, he also clarifies that there is no need to be extreme and that if a bad word is used in a «good sense,» then it should be taken as such.

Fernandez, who has been dubbed the «Camarón of our time,» despite not believing that he is comparable to the legendary Flamenco singer, is known for his unique voice and style. Fernandez believes that Flamenco is not exclusive to Andalucia, but belongs to anyone who is passionate about it. He mentions artists such as Carmen Amaya, Sabicas, and Rafael Farina, and points out that everyone has their own unique style.

Fernandez’s new album ‘Pura Sangre’, produced by Diego del Morao and Pional, reflects his views on injustices in the world, nature, silence, and love, and is based on his personal experiences as a Gypsy. The new release provides Fernandez with a platform to express his admiration towards his influences. Fernandez admits that he has received criticism from the Gypsy community, but that he is not phased by it. He also suggests that there are some aspects of Gypsy culture that need to be altered in line with the changing society, but the good aspects should be retained. He believes that this includes respect for elders, even if they are not relatives.

Israel Fernandez has been active in the Flamenco genre for the past several years and has become a household name, not only in Spain but around the world. Despite the high ticket prices for some of his concerts, Fernandez believes that everyone should have access to culture. As a result, he proposes that free tickets should be given to those who cannot afford them. Fernandez will be performing over the summer at various venues throughout Spain, including the Teatro Cervantes in Malaga and the Concert Music in Chiclana (Cadiz).
